Coast Guard: Missing boater’s body found

MARION – Update: The Coast Guard has confirmed the body of the missing boater was recovered in the Cape Cod Canal.

(Previous story) The Coast Guard is searching for a person in the water Saturday after an unmanned boat was found running with no one aboard in Buzzard’s Bay.

At about 3:45 p.m. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a report from a crew member aboard a commercial assistance provider vessel that the 30-foot vessel was in gear and making way without an operator in the vicinity of the west entrance to Cape Cod Canal.

Coast Guard Stations Woods Hole and Cape Cod Canal launched a 45-foot response boat crew and 29-foot response boat crew, and Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod launched an MH-60 helicopter crew. The Coast Guard Cutter Ocracoke, multiple local government agencies and three good Samaritans have also responded.

The Coast Guard is searching an area from Buzzard’s Bay to Nye’s Neck. They are set to search through the night and into tomorrow.

The vessel has since been secured at the town dock in Onset, Massachusetts.
