Video: Container fire doused in Dennis

blazing container

SOUTH DENNIS – At 7:14 a.m. Monday the Dennis Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 57 Theophilus F. Smith Road. The Harwich Fire Department responded on mutual aid. The first arriving unit reported the fire was in a shipping container.

Working in temperatures just above zero, firefighters attacked the blaze using the water supply onboard the fire engines. Some of the container’s contents caused minor explosions. The fire was quickly extinguished.

When firefighters arrived, they found a man on scene ill dressed for the frigid weather. He was examined by Dennis medics and questioned by Dennis police officers. He refused treatment or transport. There is some question as to whether he might have been living in a shipping container located at the site of Discount Septic Pumping and Cape Cod Septic Inspection.

Dennis fire and police officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
