Updated: Cotuit Firefighters respond to a report of a building fire


COTUIT
– A passerby reported smoke coming from the building and the fire alarm sounding at 100 Mooring Drive Cotuit around 0640 this morning.

On arrival firefighters had to force entry to the unoccupied home. The fire found on the first floor reportedly extending up to the attic and was quickly extinguished.

Firefighters from Mashpee and Centerville Osterville, Marstons Mills assisted at the scene, West Barnstable Fire covered Cotuit Station.

The fire is being investigated by The State Fire Marshal and Barnstable Police.

Statement from Cotuit Fire: At 6:28 AM this morning, Good Samaritan, Bill Pender, was driving on Mooring Drive. While stopped to allow a group of turkeys to cross the road he noticed light smoke coming from the eves and heard an alarm sounding in the house next to him. Mr. Pender called 911 and banged on the front door to alert any potential occupants. Fortunately, the home was unoccupied. An engine and chief responded from Cotuit, a ladder truck and ambulance from Centerville, an engine from Mashpee and an engine from West Barnstable covered the Cotuit Fire Station. Upon location we found light smoke coming from the roof. Firefighters made entry and found approximately 25% of the interior was involved in fire. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, searched for occupants and checked for extension of the fire. There were no injuries. The owner responded from a primary residence. The Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
