Dennis Police Association thanks YD CERT

CERT teamDENNIS – Dennis Police Detective Christine Hornby, president of the Dennis Police Association (DPA), presented the Yarmouth-Dennis Community Emergency Response Team (YD CERT) with a $250 donation from the DPA at the team’s monthly meeting on Tuesday night in West Dennis.

In addition to her roles in the Department and the DPA, Detective Hornby is also the race director of the DPA Halloween Hustle road race held yearly at the end of October. The race serves as an important fundraiser for the DPA scholarship program and other worthwhile causes. YD CERT has supported the race since its inception four years ago with parking management and course safety.

“We wouldn’t be able to pull that event off with the assistance of your team.” Detective Hornby said to YD CERT Coordinator Gaynor Foster. “It has really helped the success of our race. With your help we’ve been able to raise a good amount of money, which is put back into the community and our scholarship fund. We want to make this donation to your team, not just for the race, but for all the events you help with.”

The DPA is a venerable organization, having held it first meeting on April 23, 1941. As stated in its bylaws, the purpose of the DPA is “to encourage a spirit of harmony among its members, to work toward the betterment of the Dennis Police Department, and to promote the growth and prosperity of the Town of Dennis through community involvement.”

YD CERT is one of the longest-running CERT organizations on Cape Cod and is a mainstay of the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee’s regional shelter at Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School.

YD CERT supports numerous community events in Yarmouth and Dennis throughout the year ranging from the St. Pats Parade to flu clinics to road races such as the Mighty Meehan 5K and the Halloween Hustle. In addition, YD CERT members undergo regular training and maintain readiness to assist the community during emergencies and disasters.
