Updated: Brush fire scorches at least an acre in Harwich

8-20-16 fire

HARWICH – Harwich Fire reports that Saturday’s fire in Hawksnest burned just over an acre, however the location of the fire was deep in the woods and the fire burned deeply in the undergrowth and peat. Harwich Firefighters worked with Firefighters from Brewster, Chatham and the State DCR to contain the fire and keep it from extending further. However because the fire was so deep seated it will continue to burn overnight.

On Sunday Harwich Firefighters and State DCR personnel will return to the fire location and extinguish the remaining shouldering area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by members of the Harwich Police and Fire Departments. The fire does appear to have been started deliberately, however at this time it is unclear if the original fire was a cook fire, children playing around or set to ignite the brush.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact either the Fire or Police Department.
