Updated: Man dies after boat overturns in Great Pond in Eastham


EASTHAM
– On Tuesday at approximately 5:45 PM, the Eastham Police and Fire Departments responded to Great Pond for a report of a boater in distress. A witness from shore reported seeing a boat overturned and a person in the water calling for help. First responding units from both Eastham Police and Eastham Fire entered the water and searched the area where the witness had reported seeing the individual in the water, but were initially unsuccessful in locating him. Additional assets were called to the scene including the Regional Barnstable County Fire Department Dive Team, a helicopter from the United States Coast Guard, a drone operated by a retired Dennis Firefighter, and rescue boats from Eastham, Orleans, and Wellfleet. After an extensive search that lasted approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, the Regional Barnstable County Fire Department Dive Team located the victim about 100 feet off shore in approximately 15 feet of water. Lifesaving efforts were performed and the victim was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Wellfleet Fire and Rescue. The victim, identified as Paul Daley, 54, of Eastham was pronounced dead once at Cape Cod Hospital.

The Wellfleet, Orleans, Brewster, Chatham, Harwich, and Dennis Fire Departments assisted with the incident along with the Orleans Police Department. The incident remains under investigation by The Eastham Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective’s Unit, and the Massachusetts Environmental Police.
