New details: Mass State Police bomb squad called to Wellfleet


WELLFLEET – The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was called to Wellfleet Wednesday morning. Its unclear what the situation is but Cape Wide News has learned an item is being disposed of at Cahoon Hollow Beach.

Update: Wellfleet officials tell Cape Wide News that at approximately 9:11 AM Wednesday morning, October 21, 2020, the Wellfleet Fire Department (WFD) received a call for a possible ordnance at 45 Pilgrim Spring Road. WFD with the assistance of Wellfleet Police Department (WPD) investigated and found a single ordinance intact. WFD contacted the State Police Bomb squad to assist with the disposal of the unstable ordnance. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad with WFD and WPD, safely relocated the ordnance to Cahoon Hollow Beach where it was detonated.

According to the State Police the ordnance was from World War II and advised that there is always potential for these types of devices to be unstable. If anyone comes across anything that looks like it could possibly be an unexploded ordnance or explosive device to immediately call Public Safety officials so they can determine what it is and safely dispose of it.

Wellfleet Fire and Police officials remind everyone, that if you find a suspicious looking device of any type, to please leave it in place, do not handle it, and immediately call 911.
