WAREHAM – A person was reportedly struck by a train in Wareham around 8 PM Saturday evening. It happened along the tracks off Hathaway Street. Firefighters had to extricate the victim from under the train. A MedFlight helicopter was called to Tobey Hospital to fly the victim to a trauma center. The train involved was the MBTA’s Cape Flyer passenger train returning to Boston from Hyannis. There were about 75 passengers on the train. No one on the train was injured but passengers have been tweeting about the incident

Statement from MBTA: On July 13 2019 at approximately 8:30 PM, Transit Police officers assigned to the South District received a radio call to respond to Wareham for a report of person possibly struck by a commuter rail train. Multiple Transit Police units responded along with Wareham Fire & EMS. TPD personnel on scene report the following preliminary information: A male, age unknown at this time, while trespassing on the right of way was struck by an outbound commuter rail train on the Lakeville Line. The male has been transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries.
Transit Police detectives are currently investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. Foul play is NOT suspected.
Statement from Wareham Police: On Saturday, July 13, at 8:00 p.m., Wareham Police Communications officers Taylor Nelson and Nicolle Amaral received a call of male struck by a train on the tracks near Hathaway Street. Multiple police, EMS, and fire units responded to the area. Sergeant Paul Somers, Officers Lorenzo Grosso and Michael Phinney arrived first and found a 41-year-old Wareham resident with severe injuries. The officers performed emergency medical aid until the arrival of EMS personnel. The male was transported to Tobey Hospital and then taken to a Boston hospital.
The accident is currently under investigation.
