UPDATED: Suspect in custody after leading Sandwich Police on chase


SANDWICH
– A Sandwich man is answering to multiple charges after leading the Sandwich Police Department on a vehicle pursuit. Police say on Sunday at approximately 10:37 AM, Sandwich Police responded to the Ryder Conservation area for a report of a male party unconscious with a needle next to him. Once on scene Officer Perkins and Sergeant Gilrein identified the male party as 29-year-old John Gagnon of Sandwich. An uncapped needle was observed on the passenger seat. While attempting to check his well-being, Gagnon refused to exit the vehicle and struck the officer in the arm. Gagnon then put his vehicle in reverse almost striking both officers. At that point Officer Perkins and Sergeant Gilrein initiated a pursuit. Gagnon lead Officers through Barnstable, back into Sandwich, and onto Route 6 Westbound. During this time Gagnon was operating dangerously and running vehicles off the road. Gagnon obtained a flat tire and continued to operate on Route 6 on only his rim. Just before the Sagamore Bridge on Route 6 Westbound, Gagnon stopped the vehicle, exited the vehicle, jumped over the fence, and lead Officer Perkins and Sergeant Gilrein on a foot pursuit towards the powerlines. Gagnon was apprehended and placed into custody with the help of Officer Wood, State Police Bourne and Bourne Police. The Sandwich Fire Department transported Gagnon to the hospital for minor injuries.

Gagnon is charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (vehicle), Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, OUI Drugs, Operating to Endanger, and Failure to Stop for Police.
