Early morning suspicious activity on Main St. Hyannis leads to drug arrest

Derek W. Jones

HYANNISFrom Barnstable Police: At about 4:30 am on Wednesday, Officer Kyle Phelan was on patrol in Hyannis when he observed a male subject walking on Main Street near Pearl Street. The subject met up with two other subjects, also on foot, and Phelan observed what he believed to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction just prior to the subjects splitting up. Phelan encountered the first subject a couple of blocks away and identified him as 24-year-old Derek W. Jones of Plymouth. During the investigation Jones reached into his pockets for what was identified as a police style expandable baton. The item was secured by Phelan and further investigation revealed Jones to be in possession of several individually packaged bags of a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. Jones was placed under arrest and transported to the Barnstable Police Station where he was charged with Possession of a Class B Substance with Intent to Distribute. A total of 21 bags containing the white powder substance, approximately a half-gram in weight each, were discovered in Jones’ possession along with two cell phones and over $800 cash.

Jones was later transported to Barnstable District Court for arraignment.
