EASTHAM – Eastham Police report that on Thursday, July 30th at approximately 11:30 a.m., they, along with the United States Postal Inspector Service and the Massachusetts State Police, executed a search warrant at 1000 Great Pond Road in Eastham after an investigation into an elaborate larceny scam.
The investigation, initiated by United States Postal Inspectors, indicated that an elderly North Carolina resident had been contacted by Reneil R. Wong, 24 of Eastham and Jamaica. Wong would advise the resident of different stories as to why he needed cash including caring for sick relatives and promises of investments. Cash was then sent through the United States Postal Service to Wong’s residence in Eastham. Wong threatened to go to the residence of the North Carolina resident if money was not sent.
During the investigation it was determined the packages sent to Wong were being tracked by individuals in Jamaica and that after receiving the money, Wong was then electronically transferring it to Jamaica. This indicated that there were other individuals in Jamaica involved in this scam in addition to Wong. During the execution of the search warrant Wong was placed under arrest and evidence was seized. Wong was charged with Extortion by Threat of Injury, and 2 counts of Larceny over $250 by False Pretense. At his arraignment on July 30th, he posted $4,000 bail and was ordered by the court to turn over his passport. The Truro Police Department also assisted with this investigation.
This investigation is very active and ongoing. More charges are likely to be filed next week.
