Edgartown man facing multiple charges after leading State Police on chase


GEORGETOWN, MA – State Police report that a Martha’s Vineyard man was arrested late Tuesday afternoon after leading local and State Police on a pursuit up I-95 from Stoneham to Georgetown. The man was arrested after he crashed, fled the crash scene on foot, and was apprehended by a State Police K9.

Stoneham Police initiated the pursuit. State Police joined the pursuit on I-95 northbound in the Lynnfield area at around 5:45 PM. The suspect was driving a stolen 2015 Dodge Journey sport utility vehicle.

Troopers deployed a tire deflation device to try to end the threat the fleeing suspect posed to other motorists. The suspect lost control of the SUV and crashed into another vehicle on the southbound side of the highway in Georgetown. He then tried to run from the scene but was subdued by the dog. No serious injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

The suspect was transported to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport for treatment of injuries sustained during his apprehension.

He is identified as Steven B. Chaffee, 39, of Edgartown. He will be charged with failure to stop for police and for other charges still being determined.
