DENNIS – Around  2 p.m. Saturday the Dennis Fire Department was alerted to a structure fire 51 Paddock’s Path on the north side of Dennis. The fire was reportedly spotted by people boating on Scargo Lake. The structure overlooks the lake and sits approximately a quarter mile from the section of Paddocks Path that lies between Route 6A and Scargo Hill Road. The aerial view below shows the house, circled in red, at the extreme left of the image, with Paddocks Path at the extreme right.

The first arriving unit found the second story of the south end of the dwelling ablaze. The fire appeared to have started on the outside and spread into the second floor. The first engine on scene attacked the fire with its 500-gallon onboard water supply as firefighters laid 1,400 feet of 4-inch supply line from a hydrant on Paddocks Path to the fireground (see photo below). The fire caused extensive damage to the wall and roof of the second floor.

Mutual aid was called in from surrounding towns and Brewster and Yarmouth assisted at the scene.  Station coverage was provided by crews as far away as Hyannis.

The fire rendered the home uninhabitable according to Dennis Assistant Fire Chief John Donlan. He reported that no one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. A dog was removed from home without any ill effects. He further stated that the fire was investigated by Dennis Fire and Police officials and the cause is undetermined.
