CHILMARK – Fire reportedly broke out around noon in a large farmhouse in Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard. Firefighters responded to the scene on Quenames Road and were able to quickly get the fire under control. There were thunderstorms in the area but it could not immediately be confirmed if a lightning strike may have been to blame. Further details were not immediately available.

Elsewhere across the Cape, torrential downpours caused ponding of water in Mashpee and other areas. A number of possible lightning strikes in the Hyannis and Yarmouth area kept firefighters busy checking tripped fire alarms. Eversource was reporting up to 150 customers without power in Barnstable and nearly 550 in Yarmouth.

Shortly after 2:30 PM, Yarmouth firefighters were called to rescue a driver who’s car had reportedly become disabled in deep water on King’s Circuit at Wildflower Lane.
