Fire damages commercial building in Dennis

DENNIS – The Dennis Fire Department responded to a report of a building fire at 290 Great Western Rd in South Dennis just after 4 a.m. Wednesday morning.

An occupant and Dennis police arriving on location reported heavy smoke in the 2 story commercial building but no flames were visible. Fire units arrived on scene, declaring a working fire and reporting heavy smoke showing from the building, which has 5 business located in it.

After entry, firefighters searched the several business to locate the seat of the fire. A working fire was located in the 1st story building portion of Michael Speakman & Associates, a Building and Remodeling Company.

Firefighters stretched fire attack lines into the fire location, checked for fire extension and cleared smoke from the large building including the adjacent Kepers Welding Company next door. The fire was declared under control at 5:14 am.

The fire appears to have started near and above an area of the 1st floor bathroom near an elevated hot water heater. The Speakman business suffered moderate fire, heat smoke and water damage to it’s business and there was minor smoke and water damage to the adjacent businesses in the structure.

Dennis Fire Investigator, Assistant Fire Chief John Donlan is leading the Fire Investigation in conjunction with Dennis Building and Health Depts.

The Dennis Police Dept assisted firefighters with scene control and rerouted traffic around the fire scene off Great Western Rd.

Harwich Firefighters responded for mutual aid to the fire to assist Dennis and Brewster and Yarmouth covered the 2 empty Dennis Stations.

There were no injuries.
