Fire tears through Edgartown house

EDGARTOWN
– On May 5th 2018 at 2:04 AM, the Edgatown Fire and Police Departments, were dispatched to a structure fire at #18 Pilgrim Road with people reported to be trapped on the second floor. Mutual aid from Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury Fire departments were simultaneously dispatched as part of our standing policy for structure fire responses. A second alarm was eventually struck that brought more resources from Tisbury Fire. Upon arrival of the first EFD command staff (Chief Schaeffer and Deputy Chief Kelly) Heavy fire on the exterior of the building was seen on the side with the second floor egress. Luckily the occupants that reportedly were trapped had self extricated from an additional means of egress with the help of neighbors. Ambulances from Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Tisbury were used to evaluate the occupants and rehab the firefighters after their assignments. The fire was knocked down quickly but the contents of the home appear to be a total loss. One person from the house was transported to MVH with minor injuries. One Firefighter was transported with symptoms related to exhaustion and another treated and released at the scene. The cause is yet to be determined and will be under investigation.
