DENNIS PORT – A backhoe struck a gas main in Dennis Port Saturday afternoon. The incident happened just after 4 PM on Lora Lane. Firefighters hooked up to hydrants and evacuated some houses on adjacent Glendon Road as a precaution. National Grid was responding to cap the leak. The backhoe operator was apparently removing some stumps along the dirt road when the machine struck the main. The operator reportedly ran leaving the backhoe running.
