Get involved during Emergency Prepardness Month

FRAMINGHAM, MA – Over the last month, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has encouraged individuals, families and communities to prepare for disasters by being informed, developing emergency plans, and assembling critical supplies in disaster kits.  As Massachusetts Emergency Preparedness Month comes to a close, MEMA is promoting the importance of “Getting Involved” in building community resilience.

“Finding ways to get involved in local disaster preparedness and relief operations will help your community build resilience and prepare for the next disaster,” said MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz. “There are many ways you can make this important contribution including volunteering, donating and helping your neighbors.”

‘Get Involved’ before disaster strikes!

Volunteer

• Join one of the 100 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programs in Massachusetts. Search CERT programs by zip code to find one near you.
• Sign up for a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) program in Massachusetts. Find an MRC program near you.
• Join a Citizen Corps Partner Program.
• Get involved with the American Red Cross or another disaster relief organization.
• Check with local public safety officials to see if there are volunteer opportunities for you to support your community during disasters and emergencies.

Donate

• Donate cash to a recognized disaster relief organization.
• After a disaster, donate goods that are specifically requested or needed by recognized relief organizations.

Help your Neighbors

• Be a good neighbor. On a regular basis, and particularly after a disaster, check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions and those who may need additional assistance.
• Start a community preparedness project with the Corporation for National & Community Service toolkit.

These are only a few of the many ways that individuals and community organizations can “Get Involved” in helping communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.
