Great Horned Owl rescued from fishing line by Yarmouth DNR Officer and concerned citizens

YARMOUTH
– On September 13, 2017, at approximately 6:42 PM, Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources (DNR) received a call from Yarmouth PD dispatch center for the report of an injured owl.

A Yarmouth DNR officer responded and made contact with two persons that had discovered the tangled owl. The officer was shown the bird where it was tangled by multiple fishing line and unable to move.

Using bite resistant gloves the officer carefully cut several pieces of fishing line which were tangled on the bird. After assessing the owl further the officer discovered both wings were wrapped with more braided fishing line. That line had cut into the owls wing causing trauma to the bird.

With help from several concerned citizens using their phones as light, the officer carefully cut away multiple pieces of fishing line wrapped around the owl.

The owl was help overnight in DNR’s animal care room. This morning the owl was brought up to Cape Wildlife Center for treatment and rehabilitation. First assessments from personnel at CWC are good and the owl should make a full recovery.
