HARWICH – At approximately 7:30 a.m. Saturday Harwich Fire-Rescue was dispatched to 17 Robins Way for a reported residential structure fire.

Off-duty Harwich Fire Captain John Clarke was first on scene and reported an active kitchen fire with parties still in the building. With the assistance of Harwich police officers, Captain Clarke assisted the residents in evacuation including a person using a wheeled walker, on scene.

Firefighters made a quick knockdown of the kitchen fire, checking the house for any extension of fire in the walls or ceiling/attic area, ventilating the structure and removing burned debris from the building.

With the fire contained to the kitchen, units from the Brewster and Dennis fire departments on automatic line response were dismissed. The elderly resident was evaluated by medics and refused transport to the hospital.

Because the house was deemed uninhabitable at this time, the Red Cross was notified to assist the residents with temporary relocation.

There were no injuries reported to the residents or firefighters. Robins Way was blocked off at either end until all apparatus cleared the scene.

The fire appeared to have originated on the stovetop and traveled to the wall and cabinets and is currently under investigation.
