Harwich Police arrest and charge man in alleged knife assault

HARWICH – Harwich Police are charging a man with allegedly assaulting another man with a knife early Thursday morning.

Officers responded to a reported disturbance on Route 28 in South Harwich at around 6 a.m. after a woman called police to report that one of her tenants was outside yelling and breaking things.

On arrival, another person told police the man, identified as Anthony Ayala, 23, had destroyed several items and was trying to break into another room where a tenant was sleeping.

Officers were also told that Ayala allegedly grabbed a large butcher knife and said that he was going to kill the person who was sleeping. They were also told he allegedly grabbed a person trying to calm him down and put a butcher’s knife to his throat before fleeing the scene.

Ayala was located a short time later in the area and arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and felony destruction of property.

Police said the dispute reportedly revolved around a woman.
