Harwich Police to host Citizens Police Academy

HARWICH – From Harwich Police: “The Harwich Police Department is seeking participants for the 22nd Session of the Harwich Citizens Police Academy. Classes will be held each Thursday evening, from
6 p.m. – 9 p.m., beginning September 13, 2018, for ten (10) weeks, ending
November 15, 2018.

The Citizens Police Academy is designed to provide citizens with a working knowledge of the police department. The classes are a combination of classroom instruction as well as practical instruction. A three-hour ride along with a police officer is offered for each academy participant as well as a day at the shooting range. Classes are taught by various members of the department who are trained in particular areas of law enforcement. The classes include, but are not limited to the following topics:

• Department history, overview of rank structure and organization and tour of the police facility
• Communications Division
• Criminal Investigations / Crime Scene
• Specialty Units
• Detective Division
• Drug abuse / Identification and drug investigations
• Traffic Reconstruction / Motor Vehicle Law
• Court Procedures, Constitutional law, Criminal Law
• Police Chaplain Services
• Community Policing
• Victim Services
• Elder Affairs
• Joint Operations with the Harwich Fire Department
• Animal Control
• Use of Force, Defensive Tactics
• Patrol Investigator
• Operating Under the Influence / Field Sobriety
• SWAT Operations / K-9
• Range Day
• Ride Along with an Officer

Applications for the academy are available at the Harwich Police Department, the Harwich Community Center or Brooks Library. Class size is limited to 25 so please apply early. The Academy is filled on a first come first served basis pending successful application approval. Harwich Town Resident / Business owners are given first preference.
