YARMOUTH PORT – On Tuesday, a Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources (DNR) officer responded to a hunter complaint in Yarmouth Port. Once in the area the officer conducted an area check of the surrounding woodlands.
The officer located a single hunter who informed him that he was hunting with a friend of his. The officer inspected the hunters permits and deemed the individual to be legally permitted to hunt.
Shortly after, a second hunter emerged from the woods. This hunter was not carrying a weapon. When the NRO questioned the hunter about hunting, the individual informed the NRO he was not using nor in possession of any weapon.
Upon further investigation and questioning the individual subsequently admitted that he had hid a weapon in the woods. The officer with the assistance of a second NRO followed the individual into the woods and retrieved a fully loaded black powder (muzzleloader) weapon. The NRO made the weapon safe and then escorted the individual back out of the woods.
Due to the safety concerns of the incident and the failure of the individual to comply with the lawful requests by the officer, the weapon was seized and charges are pending.
