Hyannis man accused of assaulting two Yarmouth officers

Jarred David Adkins

YARMOUTH – Yarmouth Police report that on Sunday at approximately 6:30 PM, Yarmouth Police Department Patrol Officers Ryan Murphy and Mary Gibney were dispatched to the area of Route 28 near Camp Street for a report of a male walking in the middle of the roadway and “challenging vehicles”.

The reporting party described the male as a white male wearing tan pants, a red jacket, and no shoes. Officer arrived and found the subject near Timmy’s Roast Beef. Officers observed that he had cuts on his feet and forehead. The male pulled his hood over the front of his face and was standing still, looking straight ahead.

As the Officers spoke with the subject to determine if he needed help, the individual stood in silence with the hood over his face and did not move. The Officers removed the hood from his face and his eyes appeared to be “glazed over”. The male then began to yell nonsense and began to point at the front of his shirt and yelled “I Demand Respect”.

Officers were unable to understand some of the words he was screaming however they did hear him yell “My Savior Jesus.”

Officers continued to attempt to speak with the individual however he remained silent and began to move his arms and hands in a strange motion. He then began to walk away on the sidewalk and bumped Officer Gibney with his chest.

The individual once again began screaming nonsense and took off both of his shirts. He then put his tank top back on and began to walk into the middle of Route 28.

At this time there was extremely heavy traffic on Route 28 due to the weekend and both lanes of traffic came to a sudden stop.

At this time, Officers advised the male he was under arrest and grabbed his right arm as Officer Gibney grabbed his left arm. The male immediately pulled away from us and began to swing his arms around uncontrollably.

During this time the individual struck Officer Murphy in the head with his forearm and elbow. The individual also struck Officer Gibney in the head with his arms and elbow.

During the struggle the Officers were able to bring the male to the ground on the sidewalk, where he continued to resist and attempt to break free. He refused commands to put his hands behind his back and at this time, a Taser drive stun and deployed but was unsuccessful and the individual continued to fight and struggle with us while on the ground.

Officer Jason Batchelder arrived on scene and the individual continued to fight and resist. A Taser drive stun was again deployed and again unsuccessful.

Officers were eventually able to gain control of the subject and he was placed into handcuffs and subsequently transported to the Yarmouth Police Headquarter where he was brought into the booking area.

The male continued to refuse to answer any questions and would not provide officers with his name.

The Yarmouth Fire Department was called in treat the man for cuts he had sustained to his nose and elbow. The male declined treatment and the Fire Department cleared the scene.

The male was extremely uncooperative during this time and was placed into the cell without going through the complete booking process.

Both Officers Murphy and Gibney sustained cuts and scrapes to their arms, hands, and knees.

The male was electronically fingerprinted and subsequently identified through his fingerprints as Jarred David Adkins, 35, of Hyannis.

Adkins is currently wanted on a warrant out of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, and is a convicted violet felon, currently on probation, with 31 prior charges in Massachusetts.

Atkins was held at Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters on $500 cash bail and transported to the Barnstable District Court this morning for arraignment on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer (2 counts).

The Yarmouth Police Department Command Staff commends the actions of the Police Officers involved taking this violent felon out of the community in to custody.
