John Benevides is busy laying concrete block for what is being transformed into a bathhouse, showers, and restrooms at Bourne Scenic Park.  The campgrounds, located in the shadow of the Bourne Bridge (off-Cape side), is completely full during summer months and its mix of RV, tent, cabin, and lodge site rentals is a significant money maker for the Bourne Recreation Authority, which oversees operations at the park.  The BRA also runs the ice arena on the opposite side of Cape Cod Canal.

Deputy Joe Brait, crew chief and an experienced tradesman before joining the Sheriff’s Office, works on a course of his own with help from inmate John Sanders.  Brait supervises the crew for both adherence to security and work quality.  Six months ago, he and a crew demolished the old bathhouse on this same site.  The 64-year-old campground has doubled in size since its inception.  The land itself is leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Now we find inmate Benevides shoveling sand and inmate Sanders and Brait laying block in the background.  When all is said and done, the infusion of inmate labor will save the BRA about $32,000, using an hourly wage calculation set by the state.  The savings realized by using donated labor will enable the Authority to make additional enhancements to either of its two properties – the park or the ice rink.  That’s as stipulated in the lease agreement.
