Inmates erect demo derby at Barnstable County Fair

Sheriff’s inmate gets a bead on one very heavy piece of concrete block.  He and three fellow inmates, part of crew dispatched by Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings, joined the crew supervisor in assembling the demolition derby ring at this year’s Barnstable County Fairgrounds.  The fair ends Sunday, but the one-night derby event has is gassed out – come and gone.   “Guess there were only so many cars that were crash-worthy,” muses the Sheriff.

Inmates eyeball yet another block being dropped into place by Joe Brait, the crew’s supervisor and an experienced hand with construction vehicles big and small.  Note the string line in the dust.  Wouldn’t seem right if it wasn’t dusty, as any veteran carnival goer could tell you.

More eyeballing, this time with Ferris wheel and announcer’s booth in background.  The fair opened in 1844, at the time just a simple collection of livestock and craft exhibits.  Today’s version has morphed into a full-fledged amusement park.   Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children six to 11, and free for kids five and under.  For details on ride prices, remaining event schedule, and more, go to capecodfairgrounds.com
