EASTHAM – From Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office: Getting donated labor means more money for scholarships. That’s a proposition organizers of the Eastham Windmill Weekend have happily absorbed these past couple of days as inmates did much of the heavy-duty lugging for the non-profit event’s 41st running.
“This greatly reduces our overhead,” says organizer Sarah Smith, who next year takes over as Windmill chairwoman from mother Liz Smith. “We couldn’t have done it without them.” The inmates set up dozens of tables, hundreds of chairs, and wrestled other heavy paraphernalia into place.
The Friday through Sunday event (September 7th – 9th) will benefit a handful of Eastham students graduating next June from Nauset Regional High School. Last year’s fun fair sent four deserving college freshmen off to school with $1,000 apiece towards tuition, and Smith says “we’re hoping for more this time around.”
The fun begins Friday at 5 PM at the nearby Elks Lodge and continues Saturday and Sunday across from the police station, in the shadow of the town’s iconic windmill along Route 6.
This year’s theme is “celebrating animals,” but also includes music, craft and vendor booths, a road race, a parade, and games aplenty. There is even a dunk tank, with “villains” to man the plank just as ball tossers line up and take aim.
