BOURNE – From Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office: Barnstable County Sheriff’s inmates recently cleared an overgrown patch of land in the shadow of Bourne’s National Cemetery and poured a cement slab in preparation for a new monument being placed and dedicated on October 27th. The 15 foot veterans’ memorial, complete with an eagle flying proudly atop it, will read: “Dedicated to all men and women in uniform who served to protect our country.”
“This is a help,” says Kevin Ward of Wareham American Legion Post 220, referring to the inmate landscaping. “A big, big help. You can take what we’d have spent on landscape equipment and labor and apply it directly to the project’s fundraising target. Essentially an in-kind contribution.”
The Wareham post is one of six groups pooling their fundraising prowess to reach that $50,000 goal; the other 503(c) non-profit charitable organizations include the Fraternal Order of Elks, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Knights of Columbus, and two smaller groups of an equally patriotic bent – Catholic Foresters and Friends of Wareham Vets.
