Inmates help pitch up Scallop Festival venues

Making it look easy
– This industrial-strength table being balanced by a Barnstable County Sheriff’s inmate is plenty heavy, but you’d never know it. It helps that the inmate has ample girt on his 5’ 6” frame. He and four fellow work-crew inmates are moving things around on Cape Cod Fairgrounds in preparation for this weekend’s Scallop Fest. The annual event is sponsored by the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce, and its proceeds will enable the non-profit to give out thousands of dollars next May and June to area high school graduates.

Same inmate’s arm, with assist here by another crew member who’s partially framed and partially obscured between table and bench (right). The biggest part of the inmates’ task is erecting many of the tents that will be used during the event – a job they hope to squeeze in between foul weather predicted mid- to late week.  Crews have been doing this kind of heavy lifting for numerous, consecutive Scallops Fests.
