Inmates paint inside of Falmouth church

FALMOUTH
– A four-inmate crew from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office recently finished painting the interior of a second-floor function hall inside the First Congregational Church at the foot of Falmouth Center.  And there’s more to come.

Work on the high-ceiling, 45 by 65 foot hall – along with an adjacent kitchen and storage space – saved the church about $4,100 in labor costs.  Deputy Blaise Cabral, the job’s supervising crew chief, was able to add some finishing touches using his dry-wall repairing skills.

“Churches have tight budgets,” observed Bill Day, who is on First Congregational’s board of trustees.  “The inmates are doing a terrific job, a great help to us.  And they’re also doing something constructive with their time in jail.  We can all take comfort in that.”

Crews will be returning in August and September for additional painting and to help replace the hall’s floor and baseboards.  A private contractor is handling much of that work, meaning the inmate component will give parishioners more “bang for the buck.”
