Station 3, the Bourne Fire Department
facility located in its Sagamore Beach section, is also fire headquarters for the town.  That distinction used to go to Buzzards Bay, but now resides here.  So, the space you see behind the windows atop the station façade is being converted into new offices for the chief and other headquarter operations.  To see how, continue scrolling down.

Inmate laborer John Sanders, part of a five-man crew dispatched by county Sheriff James Cummings, is puttying dry wall inside the new suite of upper-story offices.  Most existed as open space and the rest is being remodeled.  The completed job will include a chief’s office, with small attached bedroom; two other small bedroom stalls for on-duty firefighters; a reception area; and a conference room.

Sheriff’s inmate William Murphy, meanwhile, does some machine sanding on a window sill – a job that should probably have gone to inmate Sand(ers).  If you look closely you can see Sagamore Bridge in the background.  When all’s said and done, the donated inmate labor will save the Bourne Fire Department almost $13,000, using an hourly wage calculation set by the state.  The town of Bourne, meanwhile, is atop or close to the top of every year’s list of projects tackled; that’s in keeping with a promise Sheriff Cummings made to Bourne more than a dozen years ago when town agreed to host the county correctional facility.

Inmate John Benevides cuts a piece of plasterboard.  The town’s newest stationhouse is one of four.  Another, as mentioned, is in Buzzards Bay; the third is in Pocasset; and the fourth (unmanned) is on Philbrick Road.  Bourne is a town uniquely divided by the Cape Cod Canal, a factoid lost on may who reside in other parts of the state and region.  Some mistakenly think it is fully on-Cape.  In both area and population, Bourne ranks among the peninsula’s top third.

Inmate Mark Higgins drives a piece of plasterboard into place.  All inmates must fulfill a number of objective criteria to make it into the inmate labor pool.  Those with a history of gun or other violent-crime offenses, poor conduct while in jail custody, many months still to serve, etc. are judged ineligible.  That becomes apparent when you consider only two dozen inmates fit the acceptable profile last Friday, the day these photos were taken; that’s less than 10% of the total inmate population.
