Kayaker Rescued After Capsizing, Losing GPS in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH
From Yarmouth DNR: On Saturday at approximately 9:50 PM Yarmouth Fire Department notified Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources (DNR) of a kayaker stranded on the tip of Smiths Point/Egg Island. Yarmouth Fire did not have easy access to the individual and requested Yarmouth DNR assistance. Within 12 minutes a Yarmouth DNR Law Enforcement officer was underway aboard YDNR Patrol Boat J48 searching for the kayaker. With an excellent location description from YFD and the kayaker using a flashlight, the officer located the individual quickly. The officer then assisted the person on the patrol boat, assessed the person for injuries and transported the individual back to safety with the kayak.

After interviewing the individual, it was discovered that he had originally come from Bass River. While coming around Point Gammon a boat wake rolled him over capsizing him into the 53F water and against a rock. He was able to right himself but lost his GPS when the kayak capsized. Exhausted, he managed his way to a beach for safety and notified YFD.

Many things came together to help bring this kayaker to safety, however, the most important of them all is that this individual was wearing a lifejacket. That most assuredly save this person’s life.
