UPDATED: Power restored in Wellfleet after 12 hours; new outage in Orleans

WELLFLEET
– For the second time in as many weeks, there’s been a significant power failure on the outer Cape. This time 830 customers were out in Wellfleet. Lights flickered as far away as Provincetown. It is not immediately clear what is causing the outage.

Back on July 11th, an outage affected 15,000 customers from Eastham to Provincetown after a fire broke out at a substation in Wellfleet.

As of 8 AM this most recent outage was still showing on Eversource’s map. About 8:30 AM the power was reported to be restored. Wellfleet Police tell CWN that Eversource officials say a squirrel got into some equipment triggering the outage. It was reported that replacement equipment needed to be brought in from off-Cape to restore service. Service was restored about 12 hours after the outage began.

Eversource says a wayward crow was responsible for Thursday’s outage to some 800 customers in Falmouth.

Meanwhile, Orleans Police report that Areys Lane by Rohmers Road was impassable due to a tree down across the roadway and power lines. About 56 customers were without power and Eversource was notified.

The map also showed 78 customers in Yarmouth without power.
