Lightning sparks house fires on Upper Cape

Lightning from the storms is suspected in sparking two simultaneous structure fires on the Upper Cape:

SANDWICH – Firefighters responded to 28 Pierre Vernier Drive shortly after 8 PM. A lightning strike sparked a fire on the roof of a residence. All occupants safely evacuated the house.

Statement from Sandwich Fire: On Wednesday at approximately 8:15 PM, Sandwich Emergency Communications Center received a call for a house struck by lightning at 28 Pierre Vernier Drive. On arrival units found fire showing from the attic area. A working fire assignment was requested by Deputy Chief McMahon which brought in units from West Barnstable FD to the scene and, Cotuit FD, Plymouth FD and COMM FD provided station coverage. There were a total of 26 firefighters on scene and took 1.5 hours to extinguish the fire.

There were no injuries reported and the damage was confined to the attic and second floor area of the house. Sandwich Police Department provided assistance on scene as well.

BOURNE – At almost the same time as the Sandwich blaze, Bourne firefighters were called to 16 Prestwick Road in Monument Beach. A lightning strike sparked a fire in the attic of a multi family residential structure in the Brookside development. No injuries were reported. Crews were able to contain the fire to the one unit.
