Local man charged with breaking into Eastham restaurant

EASTHAM – Eastham Police report that on Friday, October 14, 2016, they responded to a report of a break-in at the Karoo Restaurant in Eastham.  Arriving officers gathered information from the owner of the business and secured the scene.  A Criminal Investigating Officer was requested from the Barnstable County Sherriff’s Office to forensically process the scene.  CIO Brian Skinner arrived a short time later and was able to collect several pieces of forensic evidence in an attempt to identify a suspect.  CIO Steve Schmeer also provided technical support by analyzing and capturing surveillance footage from a security system.  This footage provided a description of the suspect as well as a description of clothing items that the suspect was wearing at the time of the break-in.  Eastham Police Officers conducted preliminary interviews of possible witnesses and suspects throughout the days of October 14th, 15th, and 16th,

On Monday, October 17, 2016, CIO Skinner contacted the Eastham Police Department to advise that he had made a positive identification of a fingerprint which he had lifted from the scene.  The fingerprint was identified as belonging to David Rand, 25, of Eastham.  Mr. Rand is well known to Lower Cape law enforcement agencies.

From the fingerprint identification, review of the surveillance footage, as well as other follow-up investigation, the Eastham Police Department applied for, and was granted, an arrest warrant for David Rand.  The Eastham Police Department was also granted a search warrant to search David Rand’s current place of residence.

At approximately 8 a.m. on Thursday, both warrants were executed.  David Rand was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Eastham Police Facility for booking procedures.  A search of his place of residence produced additional items that were seized as evidence of the crime.

David Rand was charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property over $250 and larceny from a building

After booking, Rand was transported to the Orleans District Courthouse where he was scheduled to be arraigned later in the morning.

The Wellfleet Police Department and the Barnstable County Sherriff’s Office assisted with the execution of the search warrant.
