Major resurfacing project underway on Route 6 in Lower Cape

BREWSTER –The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division District 5 has begun resurfacing and related work on Route 6 in Harwich, Brewster and Orleans this week.

The roadway work will be performed between the hours of9:00 p.m., and5:00 a.m., on Sunday night through Friday morning. The off-roadway work will be performed between the hours of7:00 a.m., and3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The estimated duration of the resurfacing project is approximately 21 months. There will be no work done during the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The resurfacing work will consist of the following items:

  • Roadway micro-milling, resurfacing, and drainage structure rebuilding and adjustment on Route 6 eastbound and westbound between Exit10 (Route 124) and the rotary at the Orleans/Eastham Town Line. The total length of roadway resurfacing is approximately 8.7 miles.
  • Micromilling, resurfacing, deck and joint repairs to the bridge carrying Route 6 over Route 6A (Cranberry Highway) in Orleans.
  • Construction of storm water drainage improvements designed to mitigate the effects of impervious highway cover and/or meet applicable Waste Load Allocations in accordance with MassDOT’s Impaired Waters Program.
  • Cutback of vegetation overgrowth along the edge of the Route 6 roadway and ramps within the project limits. Vegetation will also be cutback around guide signs to improve visibility.

Traffic management will consist of temporary traffic control measures, construction signage, truck-mounted attenuators, arrow boards, traffic cones and drums.

Detours will also be required for night-time operations and police details will be utilized as needed. All detours will be signed accordingly.

Drivers who are traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.

All scheduled work is weather dependent and/or may be impacted due to an emergency situation.
