Man, 82, drowns in Yarmouth motel pool

SOUTH YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police Department reports that on Sunday an 82-year-old man drowned while swimming in the pool at the Ambassador Inn and Suites located at 1314 Route 28 in South Yarmouth. A 911 call came in at approximately 1:54 p.m. reporting the drowning with CPR in progress.

According to reports, a guest observed a body at the bottom of the pool and notified the manager. The manager and staff immediately called 911, removed Mr. Murphy from the pool and provided CPR until first responders arrived.

Yarmouth police officers arrived at the scene and assisted the manager of the motel who was performing CPR on the victim. Yarmouth Fire Department personnel arrived and provided full and advanced cardiovascular life-saving measures and immediately transported the victim by to Cape Cod Hospital where despite all of the lifesaving efforts he was unable to survive.

The initial investigation indicates that James F. Murphy, 82, of South Dennis, was swimming in the pool by himself. The department reports that Murphy was an avid swimmer and swam at the motel several times a week.

As in the cases of all untimely deaths, the Yarmouth Police Department notified the Massachusetts State Police and the case is currently under investigation by the Yarmouth and State Police Detective Units.
