FALMOUTH – Falmouth Police report that at approximately 1:10 AM Monday morning, a caller reported that a car had crashed onto the beach at the end of Maravista Ave. Officers arrived to find an unoccupied car at the water’s edge and the tide had started to flood the front of the vehicle. The operator and lone occupant of the car was located attempting to hide in an adjacent yard. Falmouth Fire & Rescue responded, however the operator refused treatment at the scene. An investigation revealed that the car traveled through the stop sign at the end of Maravista Avenue, went across Menauhant Road and then proceeded another 100+ ft. on the beach before coming to a stop at the edge of the water. As a result, the operator, identified in the Falmouth Police log as Jesse C. Cooke, 31, of East Falmouth was placed under arrest for operating under the influence of liquor, operating negligently to endanger, marked lanes violation, operating after license suspended, and speeding. It was also determined that a warrant had been issued for his arrest for Uninsured Motor Vehicle and Unregistered Motor Vehicle.

The intersection has been the scene of several incidents where vehicles failed to stop at the bottom of Maravista and ended up on the beach. CWN reported on January 9th that at about 6:57 PM, we responded to the beach area near the intersection of Maravista Avenue and Menauhant Road. for a vehicle in the water. Responding officers found the car upright and just beyond the waterline (photo below). The 28-year-old female operator had already been helped out of the car by a witness to the crash. The operator, and sole occupant of the car, was transported to the Falmouth Hospital by Falmouth Fire-Rescue with injuries that were not life-threatening. The Falmouth Department of Public Works responded with a front end loader to assist the local tow company in pulling the vehicle out of the water and sand. The cause of the crash is under investigation but we know that the car was traveling southerly on Maravista Avenue at a high rate of speed. The vehicle did not stop for the stop sign, crossed over Menauhant Road, went into the sand and traveled about 50 yards before coming to rest in the water.
