SANDWICH – A crash around 7:30 a.m. Saturday on Route 6 between Exit 2 and the Sagamore Bridge closed the westbound lanes of the highway for around an hour, causing massive traffic jams in the area. Reports from the scene indicate that an eastbound vehicle crossed over the median and landed in the westbound lane rolling over. A westbound vehicle swerved to avoid the first crash and also rolled over. A third vehicle was reportedly hit by a part of one of the other cars.
The driver of the first vehicle was extricated by Sandwich firefighters and evacuated by helicopter from the Henry T. Wing School to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The occupants of the second vehicle were taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth. The driver of the third vehicle was treated and released at the scene. The Massachusetts State Police are investigating the crash.
