NANTUCKET – A man apparently drowned while swimming at Nobadeer Beach on Nantucket. Lifeguards were responding to reports of multiple swimmers in distress when they found the man in his 40’s unresponsive in the water. He was rushed to Nantucket Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead. At least two others including a child were rescued safely. Forecasters had issued High Surf Advisories as Hurricane Gert passed well off shore but produced large swells along south facing beaches.

Similar conditions were reported on Martha’s Vineyard where Edgartown officials sent out a text alert “Offshore storm causing high surf and strong rip currents. Please take caution if you plan on going in the water. Abnormally high tides have reduced beach area and some lifeguard stands removed as they’d be washed out – please stay off the dunes/beachgrass, nothing but ticks & poison ivy there anyway.”
