MASHPEE – The Sandwich and Barnstable fire tower observers alerted Mashpee firefighters to a brush fire at Quinaquisset Avenue and Route 28 along the side of a popular walking trail by the Mashpee River shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday. About a quarter acre was burned before the fire was brought under control. The Mashpee Fire Department is investigating the cause.

The Massachusetts Bureau of Forest Fire Control assisted Mashpee firefighters at the scene. The Bureau has four Cape Cod fire towers in service today because of the high fire danger.
