Mashpee Police stepping up patrols after unruly crowds in Popponesset and “the spit”

MASHPEE – The Mashpee Police Department would like to extend a thank you to the majority of citizens for making the 4th of July a safe weekend. Unfortunately, not every citizen or guest was able to act appropriately. Officers responded to dozens of calls for service in New Seabury, specifically the area of Popponesset and “the spit” beach area for large unruly crowds, noise complaints, fights and other general disturbances.

Police say that when officers arrived each evening they were met by hundreds of individuals ranging from 16 to 25 years old. These individuals showed little respect for their neighbors, the beach or the officers. Each morning the beach was left littered with debris, which included empty beer cans, broken glass bottles, clothing and shattered tables and chairs. Beach goers were forced to clean up the mess left behind before they could enjoy the day with their families.

Due to these unfortunate events and numerous complaints, MPD will be heavily patrolling the area of New Seabury in several different capacities this weekend. Any criminal behavior that is witnessed will be handled accordingly. The Department hopes this helps to end the unruly behavior and everyone can enjoy the rest of their summer.

Comments

  1. Citizens need to start filming these large groups of unruly individuals so that there is video evidence for later prosecution. It is nearly impossible for any small local police force to confront “hundreds of individuals” and not potentially escalate the situation. These drunken hoards feel emboldened by their numbers. Citizens need to find a non violent way to back up their police officers. Filming the unruly crowds, and sharing them with your local police and media, is one way to do that.
