YARMOUTH PORT – Yarmouth Police report that on Wednesday at 9:28 a.m., a 49-year-old woman driving east on Route 6A in Yarmouth Port struck a parked fully marked Yarmouth Police Department black-and-white patrol cruiser while the police officer inside was conducting speed enforcement in the busy area of Yarmouth Port Village.
Patrol Officer Sean Geary was seat-belted inside his 2013 Ford Police Interceptor sedan, parked parallel alongside Route 6A 3 feet off the roadway, and observed the vehicle coming towards him in his rearview mirror at approximately 28 miles per hour in the posted 30 MPH zone. For an unknown reason, the driver drifted to the right—left the eastbound travel lane, drove over the white fog line—and struck the left rear of the cruiser and then flipped over in the middle of Route 6A.
Yarmouth police and firefighters responded to the scene and provided medical services. Members of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit provided evidence collection services. The roadway was closed and traffic diverted for approximately one hour.
Patrol Officer Geary was uninjured and the driver of the 2001 Toyota RAV4 was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis by Yarmouth Fire Rescue ambulance suffering from minor injuries.
Both vehicles involved were severely damaged and the police cruiser is out of service.
The driver of the Toyota, Gwendolyn Warren of Hyannis, was criminally cited for operating negligently to endanger and marked lanes violation.
To add to traffic problems, Strawberry Lane in the area of Route 6A was closed due to paving.
