Missing man found deceased in Yarmouthport

YARMOUTHPORT – The Yarmouth Police Department reports that on Monday at approximately 5:55 p.m. Yarmouth Police Department patrol officers were dispatched to the SavOn Gas Station on Route 6A in Yarmouthport for a report of a missing person.

Officers met with a man who reported that his 55-year-old friend, Jody T. Ashkenazi, was missing. According to the man, he dropped his friend off at nearby Gray’s Beach in Yarmouthport between the hours of 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. at the parking area of Gray’s Beach with the understanding that the friend would call for a ride in approximately one hour. After approximately three hours with no contact the man called the police.

Officers responded to Gray’s Beach and searched the boardwalk, marsh area surrounding the boardwalk, the beach and the parking area with no results.

Members of the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing arrived and conducted a detailed nighttime air support search of the area by State Police helicopter with no success.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. officers from the Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources arrived on scene to aid in the search.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., one of the Natural Resources officers, who was patrolling the area on an All-Terrain Vehicle, located the missing man unresponsive, approximately 1/4 of a mile into the Callery-Darling Conservation area east of Center Street at the intersection of Alms House Road.

Yarmouth Police detectives and members of the Yarmouth Fire Department responded and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene with no apparent sign of criminal activity.
