MSP Bomb Squad detonates Marine Marker in Chilmark

CHILMARK
– Mass State Police report that on Tuesday morning, the Chilmark Police Department on Martha’s Vineyard contacted State Police to request Troopers from the bomb squad respond to evaluate a marine marker flare that had been discovered. Troopers Michael Rockett and Daniel Jones from the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Section responded and determined that disposal would be required.

Marine marker flares are pyrotechnic devices that used in a variety of marine applications, often by the military and often during training or search and rescue missions, to mark a location on the surface of the sea. The marker is designed to be activated by a percussion device when it hits the water and releases smoke and florescent flame or dye to indicate a position on the ocean. It is fairly common for markers that failed to activate whenever they were initially deployed to wash up in coastal communities.

Troopers Jones and Rockett determined that an appropriate disposal site for this marker would be Lucy Vincent Beach. Following the closing of the public beach, the item was transported to the site and countercharged, rendering it safe.

Our bomb squad frequently responds to missions like this one involving undetonated ordnance or pyrotechnic devices found in towns and cities across the state.
