Multi-agency operation seizes over $400,000 in Hyannis

HYANNIS – Barnstable Police report that on Monday detectives from the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Barnstable Police and Massachusetts State Police representing the Plymouth and Cape and Islands detective units conducted surveillance activities in the area of the Festival Plaza on Route. 132.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., detectives observed a white male carrying a small bag exit a white SUV and enter the Friendly’s Restaurant. The SUV was occupied by two other males who slowly circled the plaza parking lot. The driver eventually selected a parking spot facing the front door of Friendly’s and away from other businesses. The SUV remained running for several minutes while the other male remained in Friendly’s.

Detectives then simultaneously encountered the occupants of the white SUV and the male inside Friendly’s. Upon questioning, all three individuals provided conflicting accounts of their purpose in the area and their prior whereabouts. The investigation continued and detectives located two backpacks filled with a large amount of U.S currency in the vehicle as well as three large empty suitcases.

The cash was seized and determined to be in excess of $400,000.  The individuals were identified and provided residences in California and New York.  The investigation is ongoing and no charges are pending at this time.
