Nantucket cab driver faces multiple drug charges

– Nantucket Police report that a narcotics investigation by the detective unit led to the arrest of a local taxi driver Wednesday morning. Sara K. Ashelford, 42, of Nantucket (right) was arrested at approximately 9 a.m. while operating a cab at the Steamship Authority parking lot. Ashelford was charged with distributing heroin (2 counts). Detectives located 32 individually packaged bags of heroin and 14 individually packaged bags of crack cocaine allegedly concealed on her person at the time of her arrests.

Subsequent to Ashelford’s arrest and the on-going investigation, detectives acquired a search warrant for her residence. During the search, police report 71 additional individually packaged bags of heroin along with 22 additional individually packaged bags of crack cocaine were located. In addtion, nearly $10,000 in U.S. currency was seized along with a digital scale, multiple cell phones, Suboxone, packaging materials and other evidence related to the distribution of narcotics.

The total amount of seized narcotics was 103 bags of heroin and 36 bags of crack cocaine, approximately 7 grams total.

Ashelford was charged with the following:
Trafficking in a Class A substance (heroin)(18-36 grams)
Possession with intent to distribute a Class A substance (heroin)
Possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance (crack cocaine)(2 counts)
Distributing a Class B substance (heroin)(2 counts)
Possession of a Class B substance (Suboxone)

Ashleford was arraigned Wednesday in in Nantucket District Court where she was held on $7,000 cash bail and was then transported to the Barnstable County House of Corrections.
