NANTUCKET – Two people and five dogs escaped a fire on Nantucket Thursday night that destroyed a home.

Nantucket firefighters responded to a 911 call at 21 Helen’s Drive at 10:30 after the homeowners detected heavy smoke in the basement.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Murphy said they encountered heavy fire on arrive that was spreading up to the first floor.

The home is outside of the island’s fire hydrant district and a tanker shuttle was required once the first crews ran out of water.
