UPDATED: Man apparently drowns in Bourne

BOURNE – A person apparently drowned in Bourne around 1:30 PM Monday. Police officers reportedly pulled the victim from the water off Buttermilk Way and performed CPR. The victim was rushed to a hospital. Further details were not immediately available.

On Tuesday, Wareham Department of Natural Resources released new details: “On July 2, 2018 at approximately 1:30pm, off-duty Wareham Deputy Harbormaster Antonio Maietta while enjoying his day off on the water in the vicinity of Cohasset Narrows observed an unresponsive person in the water.

Deputy Maietta immediately navigated his private personal watercraft over to the victim to provide assistance. Deputy Maietta attempted to verbally alert bystanders at Taylors Point Marina and shoreline for help. Seeing no vessels in the vicinity to assist Deputy Maietta entered the water keeping the victim above surface.

Deputy Maietta was able to swim the victim to the shoreline where medical assistance was provided by civilians, Bourne Firefighters, Wareham EMS and Bourne Police Department.

On behalf of the Wareham Department of Natural Resources, we would like to commend Deputy Harbormaster Antonio Maietta for his swift and selfless act of entering the water in an area known for dangerous currents and high vessel traffic to assist the unresponsive individual. We are proud to have you as a dedicated member of our team.

Our prayers are with the victim and the victims family during this very difficult time.”
