CHILMARK – State Police are investigating a fatal crash on Martha’s Vineyard Friday morning that killed a 17-year-old Oak Bluffs teen.

Troopers responded to reports of a serious crash just before 8 a.m. on Middle Road near Tea Road in Chilmark.

On arrival, Trooper Robert Branca discovered that a 1994 Chevrolet K1500 Utility, driven by Jake S. Baird, was traveling on Middle Road when for reasons still under investigation, lost control and exited the roadway.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Baird was operating the vehicle on Middle Road when the vehicle came into a curve.

The vehicle traveled to the left side of the roadway, back to the right side, where it left the roadway, striking a tree and then down an embankment, coming to rest.

Baird was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and were transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

No further information was immediately available.
